Crossing Borders: Contemporary Art and University Merge in Palermo

exhibition · 2026-04-26

On March 26, 2025, the University of Palermo's Law Department launched 'Crossing Borders, Popoli in Movimento,' an exhibition project curated by Alessandra Borghese and promoted by Fondazione Ghenie Chapels – Mecenatismo per l'Arte. The initiative features works by six international artists—Claire Fontaine, Yuri Ancarani, Paolo Pellegrin, Francesco Vezzoli, Loredana Longo—plus Adrian Ghenie's painting 'The Raft 2,' referencing Géricault's 'The Raft of the Medusa,' presented for the first time in Italy on December 9. The artworks are displayed in the Sala dei Busti and Aula Magna, open to the public Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 17:00. The project integrates art into university life, with migration-themed lectures organized by the Department of Humanities (directed by Concetta Giliberto) offering academic credits. Unipa Heritage Sistema Museale di Ateneo (presided by Michelangelo Gruttadauria) supports the initiative, aiming to create a widespread museum network. Borghese stated the foundation, established in 2022 in the Chiesa della Madonna della Mazza, seeks to foster cultural exchange and social engagement through contemporary art patronage.
