Cristina Vatielli Wins Sony World Photography Award for Picasso's Women Series

Italian photographer Cristina Vatielli (Rome, 1983) won second place in the Staged Photography category at the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards, announced during the ceremony in London on April 21. Her series Picasso's Women consists of seven staged photographs, each dedicated to a different woman loved by Pablo Picasso: Eva Gouel, Gaby Depeyre, Olga Khokhlova, Marie-Thérèse Walter, Françoise Gilot, Jacqueline Roque, and Dora Maar. The project aims to bring attention to these women, who are often overshadowed by Picasso's fame, highlighting their roles as lovers, muses, and victims of his intense passion, which sometimes led to nervous breakdowns, jealousy, depression, or suicide. Vatielli's work, along with other winners and finalists, is on display at Somerset House in London until May 8, 2016, before embarking on a world tour.
