Cristiana Collu's Radical Rehang at Rome's Galleria Nazionale

Cristiana Collu, director of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, has completely overhauled the museum's permanent collection display with a temporary exhibition titled 'Time is Out of Joint,' running until April 15, 2018. Collaborating with Saretto Cincinelli, Collu replaces the traditional chronological, didactic arrangement with a web of thematic and visual connections, pairing works across centuries—such as Medardo Rosso's wax sculptures with Alessandro Piangiamore's, or Capogrossi's signs opposite a Jeff Wall photograph. The exhibition notably highlights artists Daniela De Lorenzo and Antonio Catelani. No explanatory texts or labels accompany the works, forcing visitors to draw their own links. Critics question the abandonment of the museum's educational role, but Collu argues the fluid, horizontal approach mirrors contemporary learning habits. The show is temporary, set to close on April 15, 2018, after which the permanent collection may revert to its previous arrangement.
