Cranach portrait of Friedrich the Wise returns to Dresden after 80 years
A portrait of Elector Friedrich the Wise, created by Lucas Cranach the Elder and his workshop, has returned to Dresden after being missing since the end of World War II. The painting was recently discovered in a private collection in France and was auctioned through Artcurial. Previously part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD), it is now owned by the Dreyfus family of Paris. The artwork will be on display until July 26, 2026, as part of the exhibition "All that glisters is not gold. Friedrich the Wise" at the Münzkabinett in Residenzschloss, supported by MUSEIS SAXONICIS USUI.
