Craig Burnett to Lecture on Philip Guston's 'The Studio' at Central Saint Martins
Craig Burnett, author of the new One Work book 'Philip Guston: The Studio', will deliver a lecture at Central Saint Martins on Monday, 10 November 2014. The event, co-presented with University of the Arts London Monday Guest Lecture Series, begins at 17:30 in the LVMH Lecture Theatre. Burnett's book examines Guston's 1969 painting, which depicts a Ku Klux Klan member painting a self-portrait, marking the artist's shift from abstract expressionism to late figurative style. Burnett explores Guston's engagement with painting's history and limitations, the painting's existential 'play of self' and 'Kierkegaardian despair', and the compositional significance of the central column of smoke. The lecture will discuss writing a book-length study of a single artwork and expand on ideas developed since publication. Burnett, author of 'Jeff Wall' (Tate, 2005) and former Curator, Interpretation at Tate Modern, is now a director at Sprüth Magers gallery, London. After the lecture, drinks and discounted books will be available. Admission is free but booking is required via events@afterall.org.
