Cowley Abbott Spring Sale Features Renoir, Van Gogh, and Canadian Masters

Cowley Abbott's major spring sale, Select Masterworks of Indigenous and International Art, will take place at the Globe and Mail Centre in Toronto on Wednesday, May 27, at 7 p.m. The auction spans Canadian and international art, with highlights including a late-career landscape by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Paysage du Midi, ca. 1900, est. CA$150,000–$250,000) and a portrait of Dr. Gachet by Vincent van Gogh (Homme à la Pipe: Portrait du Docteur Gachet, 1890, est. CA$150,000–$250,000). Renoir's work reflects his shift after developing arthritis, while van Gogh's piece was created under Dr. Gachet's care in Auvers-sur-Oise. Canadian lots include Emily Carr's Wind (1936, est. CA$500,000–$700,000), inspired by Albert Head on Vancouver Island, and Lawren Stewart Harris's Above Coldwell Bay, North Shore, Lake Superior (1925, est. CA$500,000–$700,000), a Group of Seven sketch. Edward John Hughes's Sooke Harbour Landscape (1951, est. CA$200,000–$300,000), previously in a corporate collection, and Philip Russell Goodwin's Camping – Canadian Club (1916, est. CA$150,000–$250,000), from the American Golden Age of Illustration, round out the sale.
