Couple arrested for vandalizing JonOne artwork at Seoul mall

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A couple was arrested at the Lotte Street Mall in Seoul after mistakenly vandalizing a $500,000 artwork by American graffiti artist JonOne. The piece, part of the exhibition Street Noise at the P/O/S/T gallery, included paint cans and brushes placed near the canvas as symbols of the creative process. The couple interpreted these materials as an invitation to participate and added three dark splotches to the canvas. Security cameras captured the incident, and mall police arrested the pair. However, the gallery declined to press charges, as the couple believed they were engaging in participatory art. Kang Wook, CEO of Contents Creator of Culture and co-organizer of the show, stated they are discussing restoration with the artist. The couple may still have to cover restoration costs. The artwork is now protected by a metal barrier with a "do not touch" sign. The incident echoes a scene from the film "Dove vai in vacanza?" where a woman sits on an installation at the Venice Biennale, mistaken for an artwork.
