Coup in Turkey Disrupts UNESCO World Heritage Session
The 40th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Istanbul was abruptly interrupted by a failed coup on July 15, 2016. The session, which began on July 10 and was scheduled to run until July 20, continued only until July 17 before being postponed to Paris in October. Of the 29 proposed sites, 21 were inscribed, including Le Corbusier's architectural works across seven countries and the ancient city of Philippi in Greece. Italy remains the country with the most sites (51). Five sites in Libya, one in Uzbekistan, and one in Mali were added to the List of World Heritage in Danger. Mtsketa in Georgia was removed from the danger list, while the Ceremonial Centre of Eastern Micronesia was simultaneously inscribed on both the World Heritage List and the danger list. The next session will be held in Krakow, Poland, in July 2017.
