Counter-Documentary Video Art Explored in Eastern European Retrospective at Oberhausen Festival
The 46th Oberhausen Kurzfilmtage Festival is set to showcase 'Sex, Rock-n-Roll, and History: Video & Films from Eastern Europe 1950-2000,' curated by Marina Grzinic. This exhibition comprises 10 video programs featuring over 100 pieces, with notable guest speakers such as Slavoj Žižek and Gleb Aleinikov. It examines the progression of documentary filmmaking, focusing on Soviet agit-prop and the propaganda of Romanian television. The 1960s and 70s saw the rise of counter-documentary techniques, influenced by filmmakers like Bruce Conner and Jean-Luc Godard. After 1989, Eastern European artists like Borghesia and Gabor Body experimented with methods such as split screens and détournement. The retrospective will also include an upcoming interview with Olia Lialina in ARTMargins. Joanne Richardson serves as a freelance art critic.
