Costantino D'Orazio appointed director of Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria

institutional · 2026-04-27

Costantino D'Orazio, aged 50 and an art historian, has taken over as the director of the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria (GNU) in Perugia, following Marco Pierini's tenure. D'Orazio intends to uphold Pierini's commitment to research, accessibility, and community involvement while keeping the permanent exhibition intact. However, he plans to reinterpret Sala 39, beginning with Arte Povera in the spring. The gallery, which boasts the largest collection of Perugino's works, will partner with local organizations and enhance accessibility for disabled and autistic visitors through PNRR funding. Additionally, the GNU will lend artworks internationally and start a twinning initiative with other museums. The exhibition "L'enigma del Maestro di San Francesco" is set to launch on March 9. D'Orazio will also manage the newly unified Musei Nazionali di Perugia, with completion anticipated by the end of 2024.
