Cosenza historic center gets €90 million urban renewal

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The city of Cosenza has officially launched a €90 million urban regeneration project for its historic center, starting with Piazza Giovanni Amendola. The square, built in the 1960s, has never functioned as a social space and has become a parking lot. The redesign, supervised by architect Francesco Spada and engineer Federica Mazzuca, will create a pedestrian area, new paving, preserved and expanded greenery, and spaces for donated artworks. This is the first of twenty construction sites opening by year's end, including Piazzetta Toscano (with archaeological finds), the Complesso Monumentale di San Domenico, and the transformation of Cosenza Vecchia into an urban nature reserve. The project is part of the Contratti Istituzionali di Sviluppo promoted by the Ministry of Culture, also involving Naples, Palermo, and Taranto. Mayor Franz Caruso had announced the plan in March during the inauguration of a sculpture dedicated to Lucio Battisti, attended by Mogol.
