Cortona Celebrates Luca Signorelli with Major Monographic Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Cortona commemorates the 500th anniversary of Luca Signorelli's passing with a dedicated exhibition at Palazzo Casali, Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca. This showcase includes tondi from the early 1490s, such as a piece depicting an elderly man from Paris, alongside significant altarpieces like the Annunciation from Volterra. Curators have reconstructed parts of the Matelica altarpiece, for which Signorelli received a fee of 105 florins. The display also extends to Museo Diocesano, where ten works, including the Lamentation over Christ, are featured. A stroll to the San Niccolò church reveals a double-sided processional banner. Additionally, Signorelli's final creation, the Baptism of Christ fresco, is located in the Palazzaccio chapel. Visitors can access itineraries throughout Tuscany, Umbria, and Marche, and the museum houses a mid-4th century BC Etruscan bronze chandelier.
