Cortesi Gallery opens in Milan with Nicola De Maria's 1990 Venice Biennale room

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Cortesi Gallery, founded in Lugano in 2013 by Stefano Cortesi and now run with his sons Andrea and Lorenzo, has opened a third location at Corso di Porta Nuova in Milan. The inaugural exhibition reconstructs the five monumental canvases Nicola De Maria presented in his solo room at the 44th Venice Biennale in 1990, curated by Giovanni Carandente under the theme "Dimensione futuro: l'artista e lo spazio." The gallery aims to revive market attention on Transavanguardia artists, a movement it believes has been undervalued recently. The 350-square-meter space doubles the size of the Lugano gallery and targets Italian collectors and international audiences drawn by Milan's growing museum and foundation scene. The gallery's program focuses on historical artists such as Agostino Bonalumi, Nanda Vigo, Vincenzo Agnetti, Piero Dorazio, Jason Martin, and Giulio Paolini, with recent shows including a Louise Nevelson solo exhibition in Lugano.
