Correggio, Picasso, and Steve McCurry: Three Major Italian Exhibitions This Autumn

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Three notable exhibitions are set to open in Italy this autumn. In Reggio Emilia, the Chiostri di San Pietro will host Correggio's "Ritratto di giovane donna" (circa 1520) on loan from the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, from October 24, 2019 to March 8, 2020. The enigmatic portrait, which features a Homeric inscription on the golden cup, was previously in the collection of Prince Jusupov. In Conegliano (Treviso), Palazzo Sarcinelli will present "From the Impressionists to Picasso" from October 11, 2019 to February 2, 2020, featuring works from the Johannesburg Art Gallery—one of Africa's most important museums, founded in 1910 by Florence Phillips with advice from Hugh Lane. The exhibition includes pieces by Turner, Rossetti, Courbet, Monet, Cézanne, Warhol, and Picasso. In Modena, the Gallerie Estensi will host "Leggere," a photography exhibition by Steve McCurry from September 13, 2019 to January 6, 2020, showcasing 70 images taken over 40 years depicting people reading in various countries (Turkey, Italy, East Asia, Afghanistan, Cuba, Africa, USA). The photographs are accompanied by literary texts selected by writer Roberto Cotroneo.
