Corot and Academic Art at Two New York Galleries

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Two exhibitions in New York highlight Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and academic painting. At Salander-O'Reilly Galleries (20 East 79th Street, May 5 to June 5, 2004), Corot is celebrated as "the father of modern landscape painting," with praise from Delacroix (1861) and Degas (20 years later). Concurrently, the Dahesh Museum of Art (580 Madison Avenue, September 3 to November 2, 2003) presents "Academic" art, challenging its pejorative association with inflexibility and soulless polish. Since 1995, the Dahesh has championed academic traditions.
