Coronavirus outbreak forces postponements of major art events across China and Hong Kong

institutional · 2026-04-20

The art community in China is facing significant delays due to the coronavirus outbreak. The X Museum in Beijing has postponed its opening ceremony and inaugural triennial, initially set for March 15, as cofounders Michael Xufu Huang and Theresa Tse announced flight cancellations and city lockdowns. Meanwhile, Zhang Zikang, director of CAFA Art Museum, released a statement regarding the first CAFAM Techne Triennial's delayed opening, emphasizing the need to minimize large gatherings and halt exhibition preparations. Design Shanghai, originally planned for March, is now rescheduled for May 26 to 29. Additionally, David Zwirner's Hong Kong gallery has delayed a Luc Tuymans exhibition, and the He Art Museum in Guangdong has postponed its March opening. Gallery Weekend Beijing, planned for March 13–20, will reassess its status on March 15, with potential cancellation if conditions do not improve. These changes highlight the broader effects of the outbreak on cultural events in the area.
