Corning Museum of Glass to Open First Survey of Women in Studio Glass Movement

exhibition · 2026-05-13

From May 16, 2026, the Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) will unveil 'Tough Stuff: Women in the American Glass Studio' in celebration of its 75th anniversary. This groundbreaking exhibition, the first of its kind, showcases over 200 pieces created by women artists during the pivotal decades of the American Studio Glass Movement (1960s–1970s), including works by Claire Falkenstein, Audrey Handler, and others. Curator Tami Landis noted that the exhibition stemmed from discussions with artists about their studio experiences. It will feature previously unseen pieces from CMoG's collection and the Rakow Research Library, alongside loans. A catalogue, including an essay by Helen Lee on Ruth Tamura's legacy, will be released in fall 2026. Public glassblowing demonstrations will be held by guest artists Ruth Yone Tamura, Toots Zynsky, and Flo Perkins. The Rakow Library's Oral History initiative will provide access to firsthand accounts from living artists, with support from philanthropist Mary Spurrier.
