Cordy Ryman's monumental installation Free Fall transforms Tower 49 atrium with site-specific works

At Tower 49, Cordy Ryman's year-long exhibition, Free Fall, showcases his two largest creations: Lightening Vines and Root Vines, both made in 2017. This display, which commenced in May and will continue until May 2018, is situated in the atrium and on the 24th floor of 12 East 49th Street. Lightening Vines measures 23 by 82 feet, while Root Vines is 24 by 27 feet, both crafted from two-by-four planks with angled joints. The color palette includes greens, pale blues, and vibrant dark pinks. Ryman worked with exhibition director Ai Kato, who was introduced to him by mutual acquaintance Per Jensen. He noted the challenges posed by the space's red marble and grey granite walls, as well as the restrictions on public access that limited installation to weekends. Ryman recognized the risks of creating at such a scale without studio mock-ups, reflecting on how previous park projects had advanced his practice. The 24th floor also features smaller marbled paintings made from test panels, while the lobby's pieces evolved into wall drawings during installation. This exhibition stands apart from earlier Tower 49 showcases by painters Jules Olitski and Friedel Dzubas. Guest curator Thomas Micchelli was not present for the interview with David Rhodes. Feedback from building tenants and staff has been favorable regarding the handmade works in the corporate setting.
