Vince Lago, the Cuban-American mayor of Coral Gables, criticized the artists for accepting American funds while expressing support for communism, despite his long involvement with arts organizations like Locust Projects and the Coral Gables Museum. Ramos, who relocated from Havana to Miami in 2014, previously faced backlash from the Cuban exile community for her work in the 2017 exhibition 'On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art' at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Cai is renowned for his gunpowder-based pyrotechnic installations. An open letter from scholars condemned the censorship attempts as hypocritical, comparing them to restrictions artists face in Cuba.
