Copenhagen's Spring-Summer 2023 Art Scene: From Bloch to Kimsooja
Copenhagen's art scene this spring and summer features four major exhibitions. At the Statens Museum for Kunst, 'Seduced' (until May 29) is the largest retrospective in a century on Danish painter Carl Heinrich Bloch (1834–1890), with 79 works including paintings, engravings, and drawings. Bloch, initially rejected by critics after his death, is known for religious altarpieces, peasant scenes, and mythological works like 'Prometheus Liberated' (rediscovered in 2022 at the National Gallery of Greece). At Kunsthal Charlottenborg, British artist Jeremy Deller has a solo show (until August 6) curated by Henriette Bretton-Meyer, covering 15 years of his career with works like 'English Magic' (2013 Venice Biennale) and 'Putin's Happy' (2019), in collaboration with CPH:DOX documentary festival. At Cisternerne, South Korean artist Kimsooja presents 'Weaving the Light' (until November 30), a site-specific installation of diffraction films creating light columns in the former water reservoir. At Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, 'Amarna – City of the Sun God' (until June 18) explores the ancient Egyptian city founded by Pharaoh Akhenaten, featuring artifacts from the Glyptotek and Metropolitan Museum of Art, including a sandstone figure of Nefertiti.
