Copenhagen Contemporary opens permanent venue with Superflex and Doug Aitken exhibitions

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Copenhagen Contemporary has launched its permanent home in a renovated shipyard building on Refshaleøen, following an eighteen-month pilot project initiated by Danish collector Jens Faurschou. The institution was established as a foundation with primarily private funding to acquire the industrial Welding Hall north of the original Papirøen site. Spanning 7,000 square meters, the space will specialize in large-scale installation art and includes dedicated programming for children. Inaugural exhibitions feature Danish collective Superflex's 'One Two Three Swing!' and American artist Doug Aitken's 'Song 1', both running from 29 June to 30 December. While Faurschou serves as vice-chairman of the board, programming decisions rest with new director Marie Nipper, previously interim artistic director at Tate Liverpool. The venue's opening marks a significant expansion from its temporary beginnings, now offering a substantial dedicated space for contemporary art in Copenhagen.
