Convergencias/Divergencias: Indigenous and Modern Art Dialogue in Miami
The exhibition 'Convergencias/Divergencias – Fuentes primitivas de lo moderno' at the Juan Carlos Maldonado Art Collection (JCMAC) in Miami explores parallels between modern European and Latin American art and the geometric abstraction of the Iecuana (Yekuana) people from the Amazon. Curated by Cristina Esguerra, the show is organized in three sections: figurative, abstract, and material. In the first, Joaquín Torres-García's 'Constructif avec poisson ocre' (1932) uses symbols like fish and cross, echoing Iecuana baskets depicting myths such as the monkey Yarakuru who stole the night. The abstract section features François Morellet's '10 trames 0, 8, 16, 32, 64…' (1971), where mathematical doubling determines line angles, paralleling the Iecuana's strict geometric basket patterns. The final section highlights shared materials: Gonzalo Fonseca's 'Forma y relieve' (1948) uses painted wooden sticks inspired by indigenous tribes. Other artists include Jesús Rafael Soto, Matthias Goeritz, and Carmen Herrera. The exhibition runs through January 19, 2019, at JCMAC, Buick Building, 3841 NE 2nd Ave., Suite 201, Miami, FL 33137. Free admission on Tuesdays, Fridays (10am–5pm), and Saturdays (11am–4pm).
