Controversial Telamon Reconstruction at Valley of the Temples
On February 29, 2024, a reconstructed Telamon was unveiled at the Temple of Zeus in Agrigento's Valley of the Temples, sparking controversy. The project, led by architect Carmelo Bennardo, director of the Syracuse Archaeological Park, and scientific expert Alessandro Carlino, assembled over 90 fragments from at least eight different original Telamons. The reconstruction is part of a broader valorization program funded with €500,000 from the Park's funds, aiming to enhance the Olympieion area. Critics argue the result is aesthetically jarring, comparing it to a Frankenstein-like creature or a Marvel comic figure, and question its archaeological validity. The steel support structure and the upright positioning of the weathered fragments have been described as unnatural and disruptive to the centuries-old landscape. The unveiling was officiated by Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani. This follows a 1965 reconstruction of a Telamon by superintendent Pietro Griffo, displayed at the Museo Archeologico Pietro Griffo. The new intervention has been criticized for prioritizing spectacle over scientific rigor, with some fearing the site's transformation into a historical theme park. The Temple of Zeus, built around 480 BCE to celebrate Akragas' victory over the Carthaginians, was already in ruins after the 1401 earthquake. Historical studies by Winckelmann, Houel, Cockerell, and Politi are cited as precedents for careful documentation without invasive reconstruction.
