Contradiction as Curatorial Principle at GAM Torino
The Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) in Turin presents "Sul principio di contraddizione" (On the Principle of Contradiction), an exhibition curated by Elena Volpato, head of the Permanent Collection Department. The show explores intrinsic antinomy in works by five contemporary Italian artists: Flavio Favelli, Luca Bertolo, Diego Perrone, Francesco Barocco, and Riccardo Baruzzi. Rather than a unifying theme or language, the exhibition is structured around a "bond of ambiguity" linking works composed of at least two irreconcilable elements. Volpato explains the exhibition as "an exercise in balance on the threshold of possibility and impossibility," emphasizing the number two throughout: diptychs like Favelli's "Serie imperiale" and Baruzzi's "I can't hear you," paired paintings, glass sculptures, and towers. The catalogue, published by Viaindustriae (Foligno), is praised as one of the best-written contemporary art catalogues in recent years, rich in critical insight and references. The exhibition runs at GAM, Turin, curated by Elena Volpato.
