Contour 8 Biennale Explores Justice as Medium in Mechelen

festival-fair · 2026-04-24

The Contour Biennale's eighth iteration, titled "Polyphonic Worlds: Justice as Medium," has commenced in Mechelen, Belgium, under the curation of Natasha Ginwala. This edition emphasizes the interplay of moving images and local narratives, drawing inspiration from the polyphony of Renaissance music. Featuring the works of 25 artists and collectives, Ginwala, who served as the artistic advisor for Documenta 14 in 2017, investigates the concept of justice in relation to Mechelen's Great Council, Europe's inaugural court established in the 15th century. Notable pieces include Ana Torfs's "Anatomy" (2005), Joscelyn Gardner's lithographs, Ritu Sarin & Tenzing Sonam's "Drapchi Elegy" (2017), and a film by Beatriz Santiago Muñoz. The biennale will be open until August 2017.
