Contemporary Art Society Announces £60,000 Prize Shortlist for Museum-Artist Commissions
The Contemporary Art Society has revealed the four finalists for its annual £60,000 prize, which will fund a new commission for a UK museum's permanent collection. Each shortlisted institution has partnered with a specific artist: the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, Pitt Rivers Museum, and Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art are collaborating with Elizabeth Price; Birmingham Museums with Jess Flood-Paddock; The Hepworth Wakefield with Des Hughes; and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art with Lucy McKenzie. The winning museum must use the funds to realize the proposed work with its nominated artist. On 18 November, the partnership involving the Ashmolean Museum, Pitt Rivers Museum, Ruskin School, and Elizabeth Price was declared the victor. Past winners include The Graves Art Gallery and Museums Sheffield, which commissioned Kateřina Šedá in 2009, while The Hepworth Wakefield and Wolverhampton Art Gallery worked with Luke Fowler in 2010. Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery partnered with Christina Mackie in 2011, and The Collection & Usher Gallery in Lincoln collaborated with Oliver Laric in a previous year.
