Contemporary Art in Trentino's Historic Forts

exhibition · 2026-05-04

In Trentino, contemporary art is being exhibited in historic forts that once served as defensive structures for the Austro-Hungarian Empire before World War I. Many of these forts have been restored and repurposed following the centenary of WWI. Studio d’Arte Raffaelli, a promoter of the Arteforte biennial, organizes initiatives that merge military architecture with contemporary art. The exhibition "Parallel stories" features installations by four artists across two forts. Forte di Cadine, on Monte Bondone near Trento, hosts works by South African artist Willi Bester, whose colorful assemblages dialogue with pyrographed boards and ceramics by Slovak artists Jarmila Mitríková and Dávid Demjanovič. Forte Tesoro, in the Lessini Mountains near Verona, presents works by another South African, Jackson Nkumanda, whose boards depict daily life in South African townships, and Italian artist Pietro Weber from Trentino, whose ceramics resemble ancient idols but are titled "Sentinelle," fitting the military origins of the site. The exhibition is covered by Marta Santacatterina for Artribune.
