Contemporary And (C&): A Decade of Global Art Discourse

publication · 2026-04-23

Contemporary And (C&) is a bilingual online magazine founded in 2013 by Elke aus dem Moore, Julia Grosse, and Yvette Mutumba. It has expanded into C& Cosmos, encompassing two digital magazines (C& Magazine and C& América Latina Magazine), printed critical publications, free educational programs, and projects bridging digital and physical spaces. The platform resists singular narratives, focusing on the global majority and fostering connections across geographies and generations. C& offers depth in a fast-paced content world, making complex art conversations accessible. Its core team operates from Berlin, Nairobi, and New York, with a network of contributors worldwide. C& is free and open, funded by the ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) and supported by foundations including Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Ford Foundation, Terra Foundation for American Art, Goethe Institut, and Pro Helvetia. It partners with major institutions like 1–54 Art Fair, Armory Show, Berlin Biennale, documenta 14 & 15, Frieze Art Fair, and São Paulo Biennial. The advisory committee includes Jean-Pierre Bekolo, Valerie Cabrera Brugal, Lindelwa Farisani, and the late Bisi Silva. C& Berlin houses archives and a book collection; C& Nairobi runs a public reading room; and since 2024, New York has served as a base for US partnerships.
