Consumer Reports Tests 40 Top-Load Agitator Washers: Cleaning, Noise, Water Use

Consumer Reports assessed 40 leading top-load agitator washing machines based on their cleaning effectiveness, gentleness on fabrics, water usage, and noise levels. Only four models received top marks for cleaning; many others were average, suitable for general use but needing pretreatment for heavily stained items. The center-post agitator design tends to cause more wear on fabrics compared to front-loading machines. Testers suggest using normal cycles with light-soil settings and delicate cycles to minimize damage. Water efficiency varied; just four models consumed 13 gallons or less per load, while the majority used between 16 and 24 gallons, with some going over 40 gallons. Noise levels were deemed acceptable, but none achieved excellent ratings. Prices can reach up to $1,500, and consumers are encouraged to focus on key features.
