Consumer Reports evaluated various adhesive hooks and strips for their ability to grip and their impact on walls. The Command Large Utility Hook ($3.49) was the only product that remained securely attached overnight while supporting a 5-pound mesh bag, without causing any paint damage. The Command Large Picture Hanging Strips ($12.45) successfully held 7.4 pounds overnight but failed when improperly used for a 5-inch-deep shelf. Gorilla Tough & Clear Mounting Tape ($6.98) could permanently support 3.4 pounds, but the frame was not removable, and its "holds up to 15 lbs." claim included fine print. FrogTape reMOVEables Large Picture Hanging Strips ($8.94) also held 7.4 pounds overnight but damaged the paint when used with a floating shelf. Shurtape Technologies clarified that the strips are not suitable for shelving.
