Connie Zheng's Cartographic Practice Challenges Historical Narratives Through Speculative Maps

artist · 2026-04-20

Connie Zheng produces maps grounded in research that question established historical accounts. Her 2023 piece, 'How To Make a Golden State,' spans nearly three meters on rice paper and emphasizes the role of Asian farmworkers in California's agricultural history. This map stands out as the sole Asian American creation among approximately 60 in the digitized David Rumsey Map Collection at Stanford University. Zheng's recent projects include 'Strawberry Fields Forever' (2024) and 'As It Is: Nothing Lasts Forever' (2025). Additionally, her 'Revolutionary Planting Calendar' (2025) links flora to liberation movements and is showcased in 'Manifesto of Spring' at the National Asian Culture Center in Gwangju until February 22. Based in Berkeley, she holds an MFA from UC and is currently pursuing a PhD in visual studies.
