Coniglioviola's Pirate Attack on the Venice Biennale Celebrated in New Video

other · 2026-05-05

On June 7, 2007, the artist duo Coniglioviola—Brice Coniglio and Andrea Raviola—staged a neo-futurist performance in Venice, attacking the Biennale with a playful pirate ship. The vessel fired 52 cannon shots toward the Giardini, one for each edition of the Biennale at that time. The artists wore pirate uniforms, and a giant pink inflatable rabbit, 6 meters tall, was outfitted with wings as an ironic nod to the Lion of Saint Mark. Ten years later, the duo released an unpublished video documenting the backstage of the operation, celebrating the anniversary of this iconic and ironic gesture that entered the historical imagery of the Venetian event.
