Conceptual artist Lorraine O'Grady dies at 90

Lorraine O'Grady, the American conceptual artist and writer, has died at age ninety. Born in Boston in 1934, she became recognized for her conceptual performances and photographic works. One of her most influential pieces, Art is…, was created in 1983. For this work, she photographed attendees at an African-American parade in Harlem posing with elaborate painting frames. She also developed the performance persona Mademoiselle Bourgeois Noire. In 2021, her first retrospective, titled Both/And, was presented.
