Computer Grrrls: Women in Tech History at Gaîté Lyrique

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The 'Computer Grrrls' exhibition at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris showcases the significant yet often ignored roles women have played in computing, spanning from the mid-20th century 'kilo-girls' to modern technofeminist initiatives. Curated by Inke Arns and Marie Lechner, this display includes the works of 23 artists, researchers, hackers, and makers hailing from 16 nations, such as Australia, Canada, China, and the USA. Featured contributors include Morehshin Allahyari, Nadja Buttendorf, and Lu Yang, among others, who delve into themes of gender and technology. Originating at Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) in Dortmund in October 2018, the exhibition will be on view at La Gaîté Lyrique until July 14, 2019, before moving to MU in Eindhoven in summer 2019. It highlights the gender disparity in tech, tracing a lineage from Ada Lovelace to the female codebreakers of Bletchley Park, who constituted 75% of the workforce.
