Comparative Analysis of 1970s Self-Organized Art Projects in Zagreb and Paris

publication · 2026-04-19

In a 2012 publication, Ivana Bago explores two self-organized art movements from the 1970s: Podroom—the Working Community of Artists, which was founded in 1978 by artists in Zagreb, and La Galerie des Locataires, established in 1972 in Paris by art historian Ida Biard. These initiatives arose during a time of Fordist labor crisis and the transition to post-Fordist immaterial labor. Podroom functioned within the framework of Yugoslavia's socialist self-management, while La Galerie des Locataires was part of Western capitalism. The study employs Jacques Derrida's idea of hospitality to emphasize their quest for independent spaces that merged art, work, and life.
