Community Stitches 10,000 Fabric Birds to Highlight Window Collisions

artist · 2026-05-21

Artist Holly Greenberg launched 'Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene' in 2024, a participatory project aiming to create 10,863 fabric birds representing those killed by window collisions in Chicago in 2023. The initiative uses data from the Chicago Field Museum and lead ornithologist Dave Willard. Over 140 workshops have been held across North America, with materials downloadable from the project website. The birds will eventually form a large carpet installation. A related exhibition, 'Flyway City,' organized by Studio Gang, runs June 11, 2026 to January 3, 2027 at the Chicago Architecture Center. Greenberg's studio in Evanston, Illinois hosts monthly open workshops. The project raises awareness about bird-safe architecture, with companies like Feather Friendly offering window treatments. Cornell Lab of Ornithology has sent sewing kits to New York State biology teachers.
