Comenio exhibition at Palazzo Braschi explores the father of modern pedagogy
The Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi in Rome hosts 'Comenio – Un pensatore nei labirinti dell’Europa del XVII secolo', a show dedicated to Jan Amos Komenský (Comenius), the Czech theologian, philosopher, and pedagogue. Open until November 15, 2020, the exhibition marks the 350th anniversary of his death. It features about sixty works, including ancient books, prints, maps drawn by Comenius, audiovisual projections, and contemporary photographs by Milivoj Husák. The show is divided into two rooms: one focuses on Comenius as theologian and thinker, the other on his pedagogical work. Highlights include a print summarizing his literary masterpiece 'The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart', and multiple editions of 'Janua linguarum reserata' and 'Orbis sensualis Pictus', the first illustrated children's book. Comenius advocated for education through play and lifelong learning. The exhibition is promoted by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Sovrintendenza ai Beni Culturali di Roma Capitale. A conference titled 'I progetti educativi di Comenio' will be held on October 19, 2020, in collaboration with Charles University in Prague and Sapienza University of Rome. The show virtually dialogues with another exhibition in the same courtyard, 'Per gioco: 700 esemplari di giocattoli antichi', open until January 10, 2021.
