Comeforbreakfast's Unsuitable Project Turns Inadequacy into Strength

Italian design duo Comeforbreakfast (Antonio Romano and Francesco Alagna) presented their autumn/winter 2018 collection through an unconventional photographic project titled Unsuitable. The term, defined by Cambridge Dictionary as 'not acceptable, not right for someone or something, not suitable,' inspired the duo to explore feelings of inadequacy as a positive force. They invited ten women they met during their travels in New York—ordinary women close to the brand's attitude—to interpret the collection. Each woman wore the iconic jacket and trousers, an uniform-like ensemble repeated in ten fabric variations, becoming both subject and protagonist. Photographer Benedict Brink captured intimate, informal portraits with pure light, while stylist Vittoria Cerciello and casting director Clare Rodhes emphasized each woman's character. The project shifts focus from discomfort to empowerment, showcasing charismatic, sophisticated women who express the brand's style with expressive force. One participant, Stephanie Connor, reflected on her lifelong feeling of being 'too young, too old, too simple, too inexperienced, too shy, not enough for others, insufficient—or perhaps simply different from what someone else expected.'
