Colossal Reconstructed Statue of Constantine Unveiled at Capitoline Museums

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Capitoline Museums in Rome have installed a contemporary reconstruction of the acrolith of Constantine, whose original fragments are displayed in the courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori. The colossal statue, originally over eleven meters tall, stood in the apse of the Basilica of Maxentius in the Roman Forum, later rededicated to Constantine after the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312. The reconstruction, curated by Salvatore Settis, Anna Anguissola, and Denise La Monica, was produced by Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Preservation, a nonprofit founded by British artist Adam Lowe, with contributions from Fondazione Prada and the Capitoline Museums under the supervision of Claudio Parisi Presicce. The statue is now located in Villa Caffarelli, near the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. This initiative is part of a broader trend in Rome to use digital reconstructions for cultural heritage dissemination, following the recent reopening of the Celio Archaeological Park and the installation of fragments of the Severan Forma Urbis. Factum Foundation previously created a perfect copy of Veronese's Wedding at Cana for the Sala del Cenacolo in Venice. The reconstruction aims to enhance public understanding of lost or fragmented heritage, sparking debate on authenticity and reproduction in the digital age.
