Cologne Pride Rally Draws 10,000 After Berlin Attack

On Sunday, approximately 10,000 individuals convened in Cologne to demonstrate their support for the queer community, in response to an Islamist assault at Berlin Pride two weeks prior. The event was organized by the Cologne Pride committee, which stressed that mere expressions of solidarity are insufficient. Participants gathered in the Deutz area on the eastern bank of the Rhine and marched toward the city center, far surpassing the 2,000 participants that had been anticipated by police. A reporter from dpa noted the extensive line of marchers proceeding along the waterfront, with police ensuring safety. Cologne Pride called on the federal government and local authorities to implement measures that would protect and enhance queer life, addressing the increasing hostility faced by queer individuals. This rally followed the tragic incident on July 25, when a 21-year-old drove into a crowd in Berlin's Tiergarten park during Pride festivities, resulting in one death and 31 injuries, some severe. The Cologne event highlighted solidarity and demanded tangible actions to safeguard the queer community.
