Collegiate Cross Country Scheduling Lacks Evidence, Study Finds

A recent investigation into the National Running Club Database (NRCD) indicates that college cross country teams frequently rely on intuition when crafting their seasonal schedules, largely due to the absence of extensive performance data in the past. This research examines 23,355 results from 7,083 athletes during the comprehensive era (2023-2025), achieving over 97% coverage of courses and weather conditions. Despite implementing leakage control and temporal validation, the features of race results do not effectively predict individual improvements across years, with men's R² at 0.043 and women's R² at -0.029, reflecting only a minor portion of the outcome's reliability ceiling (~0.23-0.28). Notably, team race frequency correlates with national placements, showing a pooled relative risk (RR) of 2.09 and a generalized estimating equations (GEE) odds ratio (OR) of 2.56 per standard deviation. The study emphasizes that program-wide opportunities, such as roster depth and Effective Racing Opportunity, surpass the significance of a single athlete's maximum race count when assessed cross-sectionally, while overall team depth for race count is managed.
