award · 2026-04-20

France will bestow its highest honor, the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, on Indonesian-Chinese collector Budi Tek. The ceremony takes place August 13 at his Yuz Museum in Shanghai's West Bund district. Tek earns this recognition for strengthening cultural ties between China and France through his philanthropic work. His Yuz Foundation has organized significant exhibitions like the 2016 Giacometti retrospective in Shanghai and supported the Indonesian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer eighteen months ago, Tek continues expanding his cultural projects. He owns more than 1,500 artworks and is constructing a new museum in Bali scheduled to open in 2018. The foundation also funded the Asia Art Archive and helped present a Zhen Fanzhi retrospective at Paris's MNAM in 2013. Tek founded his Shanghai museum in 2014.
