Collateral: When Art Looks at Cinema at Hangar Bicocca, Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The exhibition 'Collateral. When Art Looks at Cinema' at Hangar Bicocca in Milan (February 1 – March 15, 2007) brings together video works by multiple generations of artists, including Brice Dellsperger, Melik Ohanian, Candice Breitz, Runa Islam, Dimitris Kozaris, Mike Kelley, Pierre Huyghe, Philippe Parreno, Carola Spadoni, Omer Fast, Matthias Muller, Clemens von Wedemeyer, Victor Burgin, Christoph Girardet, Thomas Galler, Cory Arcangel, and others. Curated by Adelina von Fürstenberg, the show explores how contemporary art appropriates and reworks cinematic imagery, ranging from Superman and science fiction to Antonioni, Bergman, and Spielberg. Artists employ strategies such as homage, displacement, digital manipulation, and sound intervention. Cory Arcangel's 'Colors' digitally reduces Dennis Hopper's film to abstract horizontal lines. Melik Ohanian projects Peter Watkins' banned film 'Punishment Park' at its original desert location, El Mirage. The exhibition is housed in the industrial building adjacent to the permanent installation 'Seven Heavenly Palaces' by Anselm Kiefer, which opened in 2004.
