Cold War Nuclear Bunker Discovered Beneath Medieval Scarborough Castle

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-17

Last month, archaeologists from English Heritage discovered a nuclear bunker from the Cold War underneath Scarborough Castle in North Yorkshire, coinciding with the centenary of the Royal Observer Corps. Constructed around 1963, this bunker was part of a network of 1,500 observation posts established by the UK Warning and Monitoring Organization, intended for three volunteers equipped with supplies for two weeks. Sealed off in 1968, its existence was forgotten until it was rediscovered through historical documentation and ground-penetrating radar. Excavation commenced in March, uncovering a waterlogged interior featuring a painted wooden door. The site has evidence of human habitation dating back to 2100-1600 BCE, while the castle itself was erected in the 12th century by William le Gros and later reconstructed by Henry II post-1154.
