Colapso Studio Restores Catalan Vault in Barcelona Penthouse

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Colapso Studio has transformed an 85 m² penthouse in Barcelona's Gràcia district, restoring a hidden Catalan vault (volta catalana) discovered during renovation. The studio reorganized the two-bedroom layout, adding a new toilet and optimizing the original bathroom. Color differentiates zones: beige for common areas, soft blue for the main bathroom, deep green for the toilet, and yellow for the kitchen. Oak parquet flooring runs throughout, including the toilet. The kitchen features a continuous storage system, white marble countertop, and 20x20 cm dark tiles referencing the 1970s. The main bathroom incorporates two windows and small-format light blue tiles. The living-dining room's vault is painted the same color as the walls. Furniture includes the TMC lamp by Santa & Cole and the Hill House chair by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for Cassina. Reused family doors appear in various rooms. Photography by Enric Badrinas.
