COEVAL Magazine Launches First Print Issue After a Decade Online

After ten years as a digital platform, the creative collective COEVAL has launched its first print magazine, titled Witnessing. Founded in 2015 by photographer and creative director Donald Gjoka, COEVAL began as an online archive of experimental and innovative practices. The new semiannual magazine is published in English, large format, and features 10 collectible covers (up from six in the winter 2024 issue zero). The editorial structure covers contemporary culture broadly, including fashion editorials, and emphasizes a research-driven approach away from mainstream topics. Gjoka states that every article is about a person, aiming to create a contemporary archive of individuals. Featured contributors include music producer Sega Bodega, multidisciplinary artist Marianna Simmett, designer Willo Perron, and a social campaign for Jägermeister that used AI-generated avatars. The magazine collaborates with institutions and brands such as Fondazione Prada, Marni, Cartier, Rick Owens, Mowalola, and Miu Miu. The name COEVAL is a synonym for contemporary, reflecting the platform's mission to document the present. The next issue, titled IRL (In Real Life), is scheduled for winter 2025/2026 and will also have ten different covers. Gjoka explains the shift to print as a desire to return to physical connections and real-life events, noting that people spend too much time online. Future issues will explore themes like human fragility.
