Coco Fusco Retrospective at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin

exhibition · 2026-04-24

A major retrospective of Cuban-American artist Coco Fusco, titled 'Tomorrow, I Will Become an Island,' was held at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin from September 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024. Co-curated by Anna Gritz and Léon Kruijswijk with curatorial assistance from Linda Franken, the exhibition spanned over thirty years of Fusco's career, featuring videos, photographs, texts, installations, and performances. Fusco's work draws on postcolonial discourse and psychoanalytic theory to explore intercultural dynamics and the construction of the Other. Her projects have addressed ethnographic exhibitions, animal psychology, sex tourism in the Caribbean, labor conditions in free trade zones, colonial records that suppress indigenous struggles, and military interrogation techniques used in the war on terror. Recent works focus on the relationship between poetry and revolutionary politics in Cuba. The exhibition included iconic pieces such as 'Two Undiscovered Amerindians Visit the West' (1992-1994), 'The Couple in the Cage: A Guatinaui Odyssey' (1993), 'Bare Life Study #1' (2005), 'A Field Guide for Female Interrogators' (2006/08), and 'Antigone Is Not Available Right Now' (2023).
