Coco Chanel-Inspired Secret Room Unveiled at The Fife Arms

architecture-design · 2026-04-28

The Fife Arms, a historic hotel in Braemar, Scotland, has opened a 'Secret Room' inspired by Coco Chanel. The hotel, owned by Artfarm (the hospitality arm of Hauser & Wirth's founders), dates to 1856 and is known for its tartan-clad interiors and art collection. The new guestroom, designed by Russell Sage Studio, draws on Chanel's romance with Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, and her love for Scotland. The room is concealed behind a trompe-l'œil door referencing her Paris apartment and features a camellia motif. Inside, green and burgundy tweed dominate, with nods to 31 Rue Cambon including a wheat sheaf chandelier and art deco vanity mirror. The space, formerly the Family Room, includes a walk-in wardrobe, bar, and copper bath. Russell Sage Studio also incorporated wallpaper from Rosehall House, a Scottish manor Chanel decorated, and Chinoiserie-inspired furnishings. Chanel first visited Scotland in the 1920s and maintained a long relationship with Linton Tweeds, discovered in 1928.
