Cneai closes Chatou space, moves to Pantin after 20 years

institutional · 2026-05-05

After two decades, the Cneai (Centre National d'Édition Art Image) is leaving its historic home on the Île des Impressionnistes in Chatou, France, to relocate to Pantin in September 2017. Directed by Sylvie Boulanger, the center has built a unique identity through its FMRA collection of 12,000 artist editions—vinyl records, books, magazines, posters, flyers, stickers, cassettes, brochures, postcards, CDs, DVDs, web pages, and coloring books—spanning from the 1960s to today and featuring over 2,500 artists. It has also published 74 titles by artists including Yona Friedman, Hans-Peter Feldmann, and Leonor Antunes. In 2004, it launched the Salon Light fair for artist publications, which became Salon MAD in 2015. A floating artist residency, Maison Flottante, designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec with architects Jean-Marie Finot and Denis Daversin, was added in 2006. Since 2010, the center has operated a 'museum without walls' of outdoor works by Yona Friedman, and its Maison Levanneur space was renovated in 2012 by Philippe Bona and Elisabeth Lemercier. The center's interdisciplinary programming involves collaborative research groups and free festivals. To mark its 20th anniversary, Cneai is hosting a picnic and evening event on July 6, performances by Yona Friedman with 600 hula-hoops on July 8–9, and exhibitions by Pascal Doury and Jean-Baptiste Caron through July 22, before closing permanently in Chatou and reopening on September 9 in Pantin.
