Cluj School Artists Unite in Trento Exhibition

Five artists from the renowned Cluj School in Romania are exhibiting together in Trento. The Cluj School, identified by Giancarlo Politi at the 2007 Prague Biennale, is a major center for painting research. Cluj has become an artistic pilgrimage destination, partly due to Fabrica de Pensule, a former brush factory housing studios, galleries, and artists from across Europe. Key influences are German artists Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke, blending individual and collective memory as a reaction to historical past. Ovidiu Leuce's works intertwine personal and family memories with reflections on emigration, using fragments of Rome's Anagnina park—a gathering place for the Romanian community—as a vegetal barrier symbolizing rebirth and transition. His series title references Jethro Tull's song "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day." Valentin Marian Ionescu explores the boundary between visible and invisible, moving from landscape painting to a philosophical inquiry into nature, with matter crystallizing into three-dimensional geometries. Pavel Grosu's painted collages feature saturated colors, mixing familiar images with everyday elements, creating intimate yet surreal atmospheres. Marcel Rusu's works present memory as a faded image under monochromatic layers. Cristian Avram engages with traditional painting and collective life stories, reflecting on color and pictorial language, though risking being trapped in representation.
